What affects one, affects all of humanity
In “Girl, you don’t need makeup,” a boy band similar to One Direction, encourages Amy Schumer to take off her makeup and show off her “Inner natural glow.” When she does, they immediately change their minds and urge her to put some makeup on. "Girl, I can't be seen with the ghost from 'The Ring,'" one tells her, while another says, "It's like I tore up a shag carpet assuming there were hardwood floors underneath, but it turned out to be just dirty linoleum -- these are just metaphors, but they are about your face." The upbeat tune may seem offensive, but that’s what makes it humorous and ironic. Schumer creates a satire in which she mocks how men try to assure women of their beauty by telling them they don’t need makeup. However, the video points out how men either prefer women with flawless skin or they think that more natural makeup equates to how a woman’s face actually looks.
Schumer, also depicts how women appearance is subject to public opinion rather than their own individual taste. Human beings are aware of what society thinks of them. We naturally adhere to the culture we are immersed in, so many women take this attitude as well. In the beginning when the quartet group implores Amy Schumer to remove her makeup, they boost her self-esteem, “Magazines say that you're whack, just leave that tabloid trash on the rack, you're beautiful and who cares what they think.” Then they change their minds, “Ho-ho-hold up, we spoke too soon with this whole no makeup tune.” Furthermore, it shows how women are subjected to the hypocrisy of our society. The media encourages people to be natural but then we are constantly reminded of how a beautiful woman looks like that they try to change themselves with the help of makeup.
At the end, Schumer turns to the camera and looks like a clown from her makeup. The boy band then leaves, “We met someone else, we’re out.” It creates irony that after making her put back makeup on, they leave once they see another pretty face. This portrays how at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter the opinion of others. Women should be able to express their individuality without being affected by how society sees them. Amy Schumer does an effective job at making us laugh while reminding us how ridiculous our beauty standards are.
